WAITING SIGNALS / LIGHT INSTALLATION AT A BUS STOP

With Heiko Hansen + Michael Fields / Commissioned by the European Media Arts Festival / Eight orange light columns illuminate a bus stop at night. When nobody is present, they glow continuously. As someone approaches, the closest light dims down, as if it shies away. When the person stands there for a bit, the light will come back and eventually send a signal to the other lights. They then start to glow together in a rhythmic pattern.

Each column reacts independently to approaching persons. When several people wait at the stop, their movement will cause chaotic light patterns. As they settle, the light pattern will become rhythmic. The installation ran over a year.
